Our Profile
Industry can strengthen its competitiveness only by continuous
improvement of existing products, by development of new products, and
by using more advanced and more economical production technologies.
The primary task of the Fraunhofer-Institute Nondestructive Testing (IZFP) is to transfer
the results of research activities to industry thereby contributing to the industrys
leading position in the market place.
We are
one of 48 Fraunhofer-Institutes and we specialize in research and development in the area
of nondestructive testing for industrial applications. Teams of experts of various
disciplines develop testing systems to nondestructively determine the characteristics that
influence the quality of industrial products, always meeting the individual requirements
of the client.
Our client-specific systems can be utilized in
various areas, e.g. for optimizing new materials in research and development, for
monitoring production lines, or for detecting material fatigue conditions in technical
facilities. With modern technological methods, it is possible to test nearly any material
or material combination.
The main objectives of our work, such as
characterization of material properties with regard to their specific application, quality
controlled production, and operational safety of products and facilities, comprise
economic as well as industrial safety aspects. Research and Development
for Nondestructive Materials Characterization
Nondestructive testing methods allow for the
characterization of material properties and for the detection of material discontinuities,
which can then be classified and described with regard to their position, orientation, and
dimension. Some of the technologies IZFP utilizes to achieve these objectives are:
- Ultrasonic Testing
- Eddy Current Testing and Magnetic Testing
- Radiographic Testing
- Thermography Testing
- Visual Testing
- Microscopic Testing
These technologies are applied to investigate the
performance of materials under load conditions, to ascertain the operational safety of new
materials in practical applications, and, more and more, to analyze failure modes and
effects.
The main focus of the methodical work in our
institute lies in the automation of testing methods (production process integration). We
also strive to continuously improve on the evaluation of test results.
About 400 employees, including physicists, material
scientists, engineers, computer scientists, and technicians invest their experience and
knowledge in the following areas:
- Basic Research
- Flaw Detection
- Damage Analysis
- Material Characterization
- Component Monitoring
- Process Control
- Quality Assurance
- Sensor and Device Construction
Our knowledge, experience, reliability, continuity,
and research services are at the disposal of any company interested.
- For the solution of your individual testing problem
we evaluate the existing know-how and develop new physical testing methods.
- We develop testing systems that fit your specific
application and are validated according to regulations and/or specifications.
- The systems we develop are complemented by detailed
project reports, operating instructions, training courses for your staff, and
comprehensive strategies for the integration of new technologies into your production
process.
The results of our research and development are
made available through the accredited (DIN/ISO 45001, part C) Application Center. The
Application Center is equipped with state-of-the-art inspection systems, and is staffed by
highly qualified employees (certified to DIN EN 473) in order to perform inspections at
the clients location or in our modern laboratories. The Fraunhofer-Institute
Nondestructive Testing (IZFP) has premises in excess of 10,000 m2. |
